Before you sign the lease or purchase the commercial property, your company must receive approval to operate a business in the City of Lauderhill.  The first step in the approval process is to complete the Certificate of Use application.  In addition to a completed application the company must provide a copy of the articles of incorporation and/or fictitious name certificate, certificate of liability insurance and all professional licenses. When the application is submitted the inspections of the business location will be scheduled with the Fire Department, Building Department and Code Enforcement. This form requires a $50 processing fee and is submitted to the Finance Department for processing.

Based on the City of Lauderhill’s Code of Ordinances and Land Development Regulations, certain types of businesses are permitted, require a special exception use development order approved by a super majority vote of the City Commission or is prohibited in the City of Lauderhill.  The business will identify the various products to be sold or services or both to be offered. Following the submission of a completed application, the Planning and Zoning Department will determine whether or not the business use is approved, approved with conditions or denied.

If the business has received an approval or approval with condition of the Certificate of Use Application from the Planning and Zoning Department, the business must submit and pay the appropriate local business tax receipt. After the local business tax has been paid payment the Certificate of Use is issued.

The City of Lauderhill Local Business Tax Receipt is from October 1 - September 30. Renewal notices are mailed out in July. Remember to pay your Local Business Tax on time to avoid costly penalties:

  • September 30, a 10% penalty will apply.
  • November 1, an additional 5% penalty will apply.
  • December 1, an additional 5% penalty will apply.
  • January 1, an additional 5% penalty will apply.

If the Business Tax Receipt is not renewed by January 1st the account will incur a total penalty of 25%.

It is the business owner’s responsibility to renew the business license or notify the City that they are no longer conducting business, even if they do not receive a renewal notice.
