General Description:

interns-wantedMayor Kaplan has a paid internship program for undergraduate Juniors, Seniors or a graduate student studying political science, marketing, advertising, communications, planning, environmental engineering, public relations, or a similar field.

It is a very good opportunity to get experience in government and gain skills needed for a career in the field of politics, public relations and marketing.

There will be two internships:

  • Winter (January to June)
  • Fall (June to January)*

*Please note the Fall internship may start earlier than June.

Flexible hours, including nights and/or weekends are expected. The Intern will be typically work 15 to 25 per week, but no more than 30 hours a week. 
Examples of Essential Functions: 
Conducts research; handles phone calls and inquiries from citizens regarding normal business communications, technical information and specific problems; handles and processes all routine correspondence, letters and memos; creates PowerPoint Presentations; types appropriate responses.

Applicants must show a strong ability in giving public presentations and communication with public officials and residents. Tasks include attending meetings, citizen outreach, contacting city officials on the mayor's behalf, writing various articles and city proclamations, problem solving and independent research.

Special Requirements 
Applicants must hold a drivers license, and possess strong skills in Access, PowerPoint, Excel, and Microsoft Word, as well as general clerical and office skills. Knowledge of social media, Publisher (or similar program) and web design is a plus.
