Open Carrying of Firearms – City of Lauderhill, Florida

Effective October 2025

Following a recent appellate court ruling and a declaration by Florida Attorney General, Florida now permits the open carrying of firearms by individuals who may lawfully possess them. However, there are important restrictions and location-based prohibitions that all residents and visitors must understand.


Where Open Carry Is Permitted

  • Public streets, sidewalks, and parks (unless otherwise posted)
  • Private property (unless prohibited by the owner)
  • Public places where firearms are not expressly banned by law


Where Open Carry Is Prohibited

Per Florida Statute § 790.06(12), open carry remains unlawful in:

  • Police stations and correctional facilities
  • Courthouses
  • Polling places
  • Schools and school-related functions
  • Airport terminals and TSA security areas
  • Bars or areas of restaurants that primarily serve alcohol
  • Government meetings (City Council, County Commission, Legislature)

Violations may result in arrest and prosecution for a second-degree misdemeanor.


Private Property & Business Owners

Property owners and businesses may prohibit firearms on their premises. Individuals who refuse to comply after being asked to leave may be arrested for trespassing (§ 810.08 or § 810.09).


Improper Display of Firearms

While open carry is lawful, it remains illegal to brandish or display a firearm in a rude, threatening, or careless manner (§ 790.10).
