Lauderhill, FL (August 12, 2025) — In an overflow of admiration and reverence, Lauderhill City Hall transformed into a nexus of excited spectators eager to spend an Evening with Bishop Rose Hudson-Wilkinas presented by Lauderhill Mayor Denise D. Grant with an appearance by Commissioner John T. Hodgson. Filled with nuggets of life lessons and swirls of witty remarks, Bishop Hudson-Wilkins captivated the audience from the moment she graced the stage. Her infectious personality drew in a multigenerational audience that filled the commission chambers and left many standing with great anticipation and continuous applause.
With a facilitated discussion by Faith Center Ministries Minister Carlene C. Wright, Bishop Hudson-Wilkin spoke across generations. She shared stories that resonated with both the young and young at heart. She spoke about the importance of reading and about perseverance. At one point she even spoke directly to youth in the audience by sharing a story about her daughter and her aspirations. She explained that from a young child her daughter wanted to become a doctor. Yet her network of friends convinced her to consider nursing instead. Bishop Hudson-Wilkins shared the importance of remaining steadfast and surrounding one’s self with a support system to fulfill one’s dreams. With that recipe for success, her daughter became the doctor that she always desired to be in life.
As the evening continued, the audience was drawn into glimpses of her professional journey. Bishop Hudson-Wilkin stated during the midst of the discussion, “I never felt out of place whether with the royals or parliament because our people have helped to build those places.”
Towards the end of the evening, several people asked questions of Bishop Hudson-Wilkin, inquiring about her time as chaplain of the late Queen Elizabeth. They also asked other questions which one response led to an inspiring story about her time officiating funerals for a particular family that came to respect her for her spiritual calling. It illustrated how a single person has the ability to transform how others view the person and the person’s role in society.
This endearing discussion with Bishop Hudson-Wilkin in the City of Lauderhill was a part of an international book tour for her memoir, The Girl from Montego Bay, which reveals her journey from humble beginnings in Jamaica to becoming the first Black woman Bishop in the Church of England.
“When you read her book, you get to hear her heart through the pages,” Mayor Grant explained during opening remarks. “You can feel the passion through the pages. It is real.”
Some evening highlights included musical selections by vocalist Steve Higgins who captivated the audience with the Jamaican National Anthem as well as intimate moments with audience members as she signed copies of her book and engaged in one-on-one conversations with a long line of attendees.
