As we prepare for our kids to go back to school, I wanted to remind parents of some tips and resources available to you. Remember that the pandemic and other events nationally were impactful and have changed many things in different ways.

If your child is experiencing anxiety or other issues relating to school, please remember to seek assistance from school administration, counselors, or social workers at the school. There are also resources available to you throughout the community, such as the Mental Health Association of Southeast Florida located in our city. For those with smaller children and infants, Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition of Broward is another dedicated organization.

I would also like to let you know about 2-1-1 Broward, which now has a mobile app. From counseling to other primary needs, a variety of services can be found there.

We have a Family Services Unit and Community Relations Unit here at the Lauderhill Police Department (LPD).

Helpful Tips:

  • Please ensure your contact information and any other emergency contacts are updated with the school.
  • Get to know other parents and caretakers so you can assist each other as needed and keep an eye on each other’s kids.
  • If your child rides the bus, meet the driver, other riders and their parents.
  • Kids need enough sleep and a healthy breakfast to start the day. Setting regular times for sleep and waking up have proven to be helpful towards overall health.
  • Encourage reading a book versus continuous use on a mobile device.
  • Monitor local news and check your email regularly for incidents that could cause school lockdowns or closures.
  • Keep an eye on the weather to ensure your child has appropriate clothing and protection.

If your child has a mobile phone:

  • Double-check the emergency contacts are entered properly.
  • Make sure child secures the phone by keeping it locked and in a safe place.
  • Give them a charger or portable battery in the event their phone battery is drained.
  • Always ensure that your child’s device is sharing its location with you, so you know where they are at all times.
