City of Lauderhill Vice Mayor Melissa P. Dunn Receives Prestigious Environmental Award from the Florida Sierra Club
Lauderhill, FL – March 31, 2022 – 6:00 PM – Lauderhill Vice Mayor Melissa P. Dunn was awarded the Osprey Award by the Broward Sierra Group’s Awards Committee. The Osprey award is presented for an extraordinary effort by a governmental staff person to promote changes in policy or practice to protect or preserve Florida's environment.
“Our environment is a key resource that must be cherished and protected. I am proud to be a strong voice in our community while working collaboratively to make Lauderhill a better place to live, learn, work, play, do business and raise a family. I am honored to receive this award,” explains the Vice Mayor. “I share it with everyone who takes individual responsibility for the protection and preservation of our environment.”
Vice Mayor Dunn’s contributions to the environment from the dais have been substantial. She sponsored an ordinance to eliminate the release of balloons into the air and single use plastics and Styrofoam products from City facilities and property. She also sponsored a City Resolution to protect the Inverrary Golf Course from development and created the Lauderhill Health and Prosperity Partnership (LHPP) with a sub-council that focuses on the Built Environment.
VM Dunn has led her voice to several environmental, economic development and community enhancing movements in Broward County and beyond. She completed the Broward Leaders Water Academy where she learned more about environmental issues that impact our water supply. She was also part of ReThink Energy’s Forum Panel of newly elected officials to discuss climate, energy and various environment issues. VM was appointed to the National League of Cities Community and Economic Development Federal Advocacy Committee, the US Global Leadership Coalition’s Florida Advisory Committee and the Small Business Anti-Displacement Network (SBAN) administered by the University of Maryland’s National Smart Growth Center for Research and Education. Finally, Vice Mayor Dunn is Co-chair of the Women’s Foundation of Florida’s Network of Elected Women in Broward County.
In addition to being a Broward Sierra Member, she is a member of the Florida League of Cities, Broward League of Cities, Municipal Women in Government, and Broward Black Elected Officials.
The Florida Sierra Club Broward Group will present this prestigious award at their general members meeting on April 7th from 7:00 pm- 8:30 pm via Zoom. The Broward Sierra Club will honor Vice Mayor Melissa P. Dunn in her own community, and the Club has expressed their enthusiasm to honor her with this esteemed Osprey Award!
