City of Lauderhill Mayor Ken Thurston launches program to assist residents city and countywide with access to obtaining a checking account
Lauderhill, FL – December 15, 2021 – 8:00 AM – During the distribution of COVID/CARES ACT money during the pandemic, the financial disparity that some Americans face came to light. There were people who needed help immediately, but they did not have an active checking account to receive the financial help they so desperately needed. In response to this need, City of Lauderhill Mayor Ken Thurston is launching the Bank On Lauderhill Initiative and Coalition. There is NO other program like this in Broward County spearheaded by an elected official. Mayor Thurston is partnering with industry leaders such as Bank of America, PNC, Regions, Truist (formerly BB&T), Synovus, First Horizons/Iberia and others with support and participation from a variety of social service organizations, such as United Way, The Urban League, Hispanic Alliance, The Boys & Girls Club and more, to bring affordable and accessible banking to Lauderhill and Broward County residents.
Bank On Lauderhill accounts are available to residents who:
- have never had a checking account
- previously have been in poor standing with a financial institution
- may have proof of residency/citizenship issues
- have past criminal record or other challenges that have prevented them from obtaining an account
Bank On Lauderhill partnering banks will offer accounts with monthly fees of $5 or less, ZERO overdraft fees, FREE check cashing, and FREE bill pay. There will also be FREE, ongoing financial stability courses to educate residents, both adults and teens, on tools like rebuilding/establishing your credit, avoiding payday loans, smart budgeting, starting a savings account, purchasing a home, funding a small business and other financial empowerment courses.
Mayor Ken Thurston explains, “Creating a strong financial footprint is vital in our current economy. Helping residents understand how to do this is imperative to the growth and success of families in Lauderhill and Broward County. Bank on Lauderhill is a comprehensive initiative that does just that.”
Mayor Thurston and the Bank On Lauderhill Initiative embraces the mission of ensuring that Lauderhill residents have the necessary financial tools to thrive in our growing and robust City.
