A resident called this morning to speak to City Manager, Desorae Giles-Smith. She wanted to let her know of the live saving experience she had with Officer Thomas Yopps when he went out of his way on his day off to take her to the hospital. She explained that earlier this month she was alone and she was feeling really low, and having received a message from her, Officer Yopps called her back. He got out of bed on his day off, picked her up, and took her to the hospital. At the hospital, she was informed she would need an emergency blood transfusion. The resident is very thankful for Office Yopps' actions and acknowledges that she would not be speaking or calling us today if it weren’t for him.
On July 6th, Dr. Sheri Valentine from nearby Florida Career College (FCC) in Lauderdale Lakes presented a lecture series at Lauderhill Police Department’s (LPD) Summer Youth Academy. During the Youth Academy, participants practiced exercises and activities that highlight positive behavior models and key skills needed in a future career in law enforcement. The FCC Lauderdale Lakes campus and LPD have developed a great community collaboration. This joint effort was launched earlier this year by LPD Chief Constance Stanley, who had spoken at there for Women’s History Month. Our partnership continued recently when LPD led a panel presentation on community resources available for temporary housing and emergency shelter. The students were provided with information about various organizations. In another event, Miss Jackie Vernon-Thompson gave a class on effective communication, a course she teaches at her etiquette school, From the Inside-Out. The LPD and FCC Lauderdale Lakes are looking forward to more events with our talented community members and law enforcement professionals for our Youth Academy.
Broward County Police Benevolent Association (PBA) Banquet held in late July honored Major Vogt and Sergeant Malik as the 2019 Officers of the Year, and Officer Dale Graziose was received recognition as the 2020 Officer of the Year. Congratulations to our three LPD superstars!
