Hello Lauderhill Family!

For Women’s History Month, I was honored with an invitation to speak to the students, faculty, and staff of Florida Career College’s “Meet the Chief” on March 22nd and 23rd. During my speech, I addressed more than careers in criminal justice: I spoke to the wonderful young ladies about breaking barriers, making sacrifices to achieve goals, and the impact of individual choices on their futures.

The strength to make the right choices for ourselves, without regard for outside influences nor peer pressure, is extremely important. I did not become a leader overnight – in fact, it took a lot of hard work, determination, and self-discipline – but I never would have become one if it weren’t for the guidance of dedicated mentors that helped me along the way.

One key piece of advice that I emphasize and underline to these young ladies is to reach out to other women who have blazed the trail before them and seek out their wisdom. My mentors’ words of wisdom, advice, direction, and counsel were extremely useful. That trustworthy guidance has served me to achieve where I am in my career and life today: a trailblazer and mentor to other young women to guide them through their own journey.

Because of the women who fought and won the battles (not just in law enforcement, but in society as a whole) before me, my path was made a little easier. Now, seeing achievements made by women in my lifetime strengthens my resolve to face challenges before me head-on. We will continue to fight any preconceived notions that limit what a woman can achieve.
