City of Lauderhill Commissioners Seek Assistance from Other Agencies and are Successfully Able to Provide Safer Conditions on State Road 7.

Lauderhill, FL – February 16, 2021 – 6:00 PM – City of Lauderhill Mayor and Commissioners have heard far too many reports of fatal traffic accidents in the area of State Road 7 (441) and NW 16 Street. The business owners, bus passengers, and residents of the surrounding communities have witnessed some of the most horrific accidents often ending in fatalities.

The issues regarding State Road 7 and NW 16 Street were discussed at a Commission Workshop in January. The direction given to the City Manager was to reach out to the State and County for assistance. As a result, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) conducted a crash analysis at the intersection. The analysis indicated an exclusive left-turn signal with solid green/red arrows at NW 16 Street would be better than a circular green light - that allows cars to turn when there is a gap in on-coming cars. The new green/red arrows for both the northbound left-turn and southbound left-turn movements will eliminate the conflict between those making a left-turn and on-coming vehicles and between left-turning vehicles and pedestrians crossing NW 16 Street.

Broward County Traffic Engineering Division (BCTED) issued a work order for these changes on January 22, 2021 to complete the conversion of the lights. The Division completed the work on February 2, 2021. A representative from the BCTED explained, “We appreciate the opportunity to improve intersection safety in the City.”

With that, the City has requested additional assistance from both FDOT and the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) for additional upgrades to the corridor. The agencies are currently preparing construction plans for the area that includes improvements at the intersections along State Road 7. The upgrades include filling in missing sidewalk gaps, addressing ADA ramp deficiencies, retrofitting streetlights, improved signalization, additional signage and pavement markings.

The construction will start next September. All improvements will be completed by FDOT at no additional cost to the City and the impact to the traffic will be minimal.
