Lauderhill Fire Rescue Recognized for Heroism
The Fire Chief’s Association of Broward County executive board presents the 2020 Fire Crew of the Year to Driver Engineer Michael Lombardi and Lieutenant Joel Moniz of the Lauderhill Fire Department for their heroic efforts.
In mid-November, due to Tropical Storm Eta’s flooding, one canal rose so high that a citizen accidentally drove directly into it. The vehicle became completely submerged with a driver inside. Lieutenant Moniz and Driver Engineer Lombardi did not have dive gear but entered the water to free the occupant, Nerosier Valcy, from being trapped underwater. Finding that Mr. Valcy was unresponsive, he was taken to the hospital for emergency medical care.
After 21 days in critical condition, he was discharged from the hospital with a miraculous full recovery!
At the Commission Meeting on December 14th, Commissioner S. Ray Martin, gave Certificates of Appreciation to Lombardi, Moniz and the five other firefighters who saved Mr. Valcy. Fire Chief Marc Celetti surprised the crew by inviting Mr. Valcy to thank the firefighters directly for saving his life.
