After Commissioner M. Margaret Bates and Vice Mayor Howard Berger each served the City of Lauderhill for over 22 years as elected officials, saying goodbye was emotional for all. The last City Commission meeting the two Commissioners attended was full of tributes and honors for the long-time elected officials. Videos and presentations for the Commissioners were heartfelt and telling of the dynamic legacies each of them is leaving for Lauderhill.

Vice Mayor Berger was honored as the “People’s Commissioner.” Vice Mayor was very connected to Lauderhill residents. He was known to send out thousands of birthday cards annually. He never missed a social function and was known to volunteer and contribute to worthy causes and organizations around South Florida. His accomplishments included a countless number of accolades from cultural organizations and his beloved Annual Women’s Tribute dinner.

Commissioner Bates was honored as the “The Cultural Commissioner.”  Commissioner Bates always had a party with a purpose. Through programming and events, Commissioner Bates was celebrated for her passion for civil rights and the arts. Programs like Jammin’ in the Park, MLK, and Jazzin’ in the Park will forever be part of Lauderhill’s vivacious history. Her recent efforts for spearheading the 2020 Census was highlighted as well. Commissioner Bates was thanked for her many events which, over the years, attracted thousands to the City.

May the rainbow be certain to follow each rain.
May the hand of a friend always be near you.
