Chief's Message, October 29, 2020: Veterans Day Message

In honor of Veterans Day, I would like to take this opportunity to salute all of our veterans and thank them for their contributions, sacrifices, and services to our country.

November 11th marks a historical day, dating back to World War I. This day was also known as Armistice Day, but in 1954, November 11th was formally renamed Veterans Day. Veterans Day is observed as a federal holiday and non-essential government offices are closed.

I ask that you take time to honor Lauderhill's military members who courageously serve or have served in our armed forces. This is the time of the year that we all have the opportunity to tell our veterans how much we truly appreciate their service. Many of our veterans feel forgotten and unappreciated so, here are a few ways we can honor them:

  • Pause for a moment of silence on November 11th to remember those we have lost.  At 11 a.m. on Nov. 11th, a color guard consisting of members of every branch of the military honors to America's war dead at the Tomb of the Unknowns. The President, or a representative, places a wreath at the tomb, and a bugler sounds taps.
  • Honor those we've lost by donating to organizations that support families of fallen soldiers. Research the organization before donating to ensure a smooth transaction and help alleviate the concern for fraud.
  • If you know a veteran, reach out to them and thank him or her for his or her service.
  • Support restaurants, stores, and other local businesses that support our military.
  • Visit your local Veterans Affairs (VA) or military hospital and share a little of your time with a veteran.

It is with great pride and honor that I wish all our veterans and active members of our military forces a safe Veterans Day. You are true heroes every day of the year. Thank you for your service!
