September is Still Hurricane Season!
The height of Hurricane Season was on September 10th. But did you know about 2 out of 3 hurricanes that make landfall have occurred after?
Many mistakenly believe the threat of a storm decreases after September 10th. In reality, South Florida has been hit by hurricanes more often in the weeks following our peak date. According to the National Weather Service (NWS), “October is the calendar month in which South Florida has been hit the most by hurricanes.” 50% of hurricanes have hit after September 21st.

As the graph below shows, most of mainland south Florida’s landfalls have occurred after the basin-wide peak of sept. 10th. This is largely due to the high number of storms that have affected our area in October. While September 10th is statistically the peak of hurricane season for the entire Atlantic basin based on the total number of storms per 100 years, this date bears little significance for mainland south Florida.
