City of Lauderhill Installs Citywide Police Camera System to help Solve Crime Through New Technology

Lauderhill, FL – July 13, 2020 – 6:00 PM – Infrastructure improvements tied to the 2016 Building Lauderhill Together Bond approved by Lauderhill residents are well underway. Projects tied to the bond dollars included major improvements to City buildings and parks as well as roadways and land acquisitions. Several safety improvements are also ongoing. Police Officer Body Cameras were purchased and have been deployed for about a year now. The latest safety project in progress includes a Citywide Police Camera System being installed now.

The Video Recognition System and associated software was designed to collect video evidence for criminal investigations as it relates to identifying license plates and car models. The additional public safety resource is another tool the Lauderhill Police Department can use in solving criminal cases. At the current time, new cameras are being installed around the City to maximize the view for the video feed. Cameras will be strategically located at major intersections, some swale areas, and entrances to the City. Cameras will also be installed at City Parks and Buildings.

Over the next couple of months, an estimated total of 73 cameras will be installed citywide. The solar powered Video Recognition System has the capability of reading license plates, defining the make, color, and model of vehicles and will be tied to other networks to increase the likelihood of solving countless crimes.

The Lauderhill Police Department has long shared the mantra, “Don’t Do It! You Will Be Caught,” reminding criminals that Lauderhill is no place to break the law. These cameras will be another tool in the City’s toolbox to fight crime.

For information on where the cameras are being placed, please email Douglas Downs, Director of Information Systems.
