Chief's Message - January 23, 2020 

Over the last year, I proudly served as the President of the Broward County Chiefs of Police Association (BCCPA). This association promotes coordination between the various law enforcement agencies within Broward County, and made up of leaders from city, state, and federal police departments. Serving as the first female President in BCCPA history was a great honor, but not as great as being given the opportunity to contribute to the many accomplishments that resulted during my tenure.

2019 saw many changes and new procedures for law enforcement.  While I was President of the BCCPA, Broward County was recognized as the first county in the State to proactively educate our police officers on the new bill regarding cannabis and cannabis-derived products, including cannabidiol (CBD). In an interview with Channel 6, I provided information and explained the procedures implemented by Broward County chiefs to manage law enforcement training on the new CBD bill.

Additionally, I am proud to have been involved in the implementation of the Autism Awareness Program in law enforcement. The project was a coordinated effort among the Association’s members and involves employing procedures to standardize police response for assistance to autistic residents throughout Broward County. We introduced the project at a press conference last April and are happy to announce the Autism Awareness Program continues to be a success throughout the various agencies in the county. 

I am also honored to have represented the Broward County Chiefs of Police at a variety of meetings. At an engagement with the Broward County School Superintendent, we talked about the development of school safety practices. The initial conversations were successful and have since led to the establishment of ongoing meetings to address concerns and methods of improvements. Devised to explore methods of improvements to the existing communications system, I was able to show representation at a series of meetings with the Broward County Regional Communications Department. On another occasion, I represented the Broward County Chiefs of Police during several important events and public speaking engagements. While President of the Association, I contributed to ways of implementing changes and procedures which enhance the manner law enforcement would continue to deliver excellent services to the residents of Broward County.   

It is my privilege to be your Chief and to have honorably represented you among the other law enforcement leaders in Broward County in 2019.  I now graciously pass the gavel on to Miramar Police Chief, Dexter Williams, who will serve in that capacity during 2020.
