Highlights of Lauderhill Police Enforcement Activity - September 5, 2019

Detectives from the Special Projects Unit (SPU) conducted an extensive investigation that began in April this year, regarding subjects selling narcotics at the Calypso Cay Community. SPU detectives identified Marquis Ewing and convicted felons Jermaine Jackson and Akil Edwards, not only as the subjects selling drugs in the area but also terrorizing the community with repeated displays of firearms and indiscriminate shootings. SPU detectives also discovered that Ewing and Edwards were both linked to robberies and shootings; however, in all instances, the victims of these incidents were unwilling to prosecute.

During the investigation, SPU detectives made a series of undercover drug purchases from Ewing, Edwards, and Jackson.  As a result of the controlled buys, on August 20, 2019, SPU detectives executed a search warrant at 4160 NW 21st Street, Apartments #F111 and #F212, and arrested Ewing and Jackson.  The following contraband was seized during the search:

  • 32.5 grams of rock cocaine
  • 7.6 grams of marijuana
  • 62 grams of oxycodone
  • Approximately 200 rounds of various ammunition
  • An AR-15 lower receiver
  • Four ballistic vests, one with rifle plates
  • An AK-47 pistol
  • Four semi-automatic handguns

Lauderhill Police Officers, as well as the Broward Sheriff's Office (BSO), assisted while executing the search warrant. Additionally, Lauderhill K-9 Officer Levy and K-9 Aries conducted a narcotics sniff of Ewing’s vehicle parked in the lot.  K-9 Aries detected the odor of narcotics, and on August 21, 2019, SPU detectives obtained a search warrant for Ewing’s vehicle.  During the search, the following was confiscated:

  • 2.2 grams of rock cocaine
  • An AK-47 pistol with 20 rounds of ammunition

Through conversations with FBI agents, SPU detectives discovered that one of the recovered handguns was taken during an armed robbery in Lauderhill that occurred on January 2019 near the Calypso community.  Edwards and Ewing were named as suspects in that case.

The suspects were charged as follows:

Marquis Ewing:

  •   Delivery of cocaine (3 counts)
  •   Possess of cocaine (1 count)
  •   Delivery of cannabis (1 count)

Jermaine Jackson:

  •   Possess firearm by a felon (1 count)
  •   Possess ammunition by a felon (1 count)
  •   Delivery of cocaine (1 count)
  •   Delivery of cannabis (1 count)

*additional charges will be filed at a later time.
