Chief’s Message - July 2, 2019
During my April meeting with the Broward County Chiefs of Police Association, I was informed about an Autism Awareness Campaign spearheaded by the Fort Lauderdale Police Department for improved police responses to the autistic community. I immediately organized a press conference to encourage all law enforcement agencies in Broward County to join in a cooperative effort to standardize police responses and procedures when assisting residents with autism.
Part of the initiative includes implementing a new Autism Awareness Program in Law Enforcement portal that will soon be live our PD website. Once this website is completed, Lauderhill residents will be able to confidentially register information about their autistic household member. This will allow our patrol officers to better respond to a call at your home. Registrants will receive a PD Autism Awareness decal - like the one displayed below - to be placed on your front window/door along with an identification card. The implementation of this program will provide the necessary details to our police officers to improve our response and interactions with your loved ones with autism.
