The city is also popular for arts and recreation, featuring signature destinations like Lauderhill Performing Arts Center, Lauderhill Historical Museum, Lauderhill Golf Course and several scenic parks with picturesque trails. Importance of Mentoring

Since the beginning of the 2017 school year, Officer Sam Smith has been mentoring a 15-year-old young man who lives in the City of Lauderhill.  The young man has been struggling with many of the usual challenges of being an everyday teenager.  However, when you add living in extreme poverty, lacking influential role models in the home, and suffering from Dyslexia, having someone that will positively push you makes all the difference.

Officer Smith noticed that although the young man was not enthusiastic about many things, his mentee has excellent talent. He cuts and uniquely styles hair. The youth told Officer Smith that his dream was to rent a chair in a barber shop. However, Officer Smith gave him a book on entrepreneurship and challenged him to inspire to own his own barbershop instead of just renting a chair.

As a result of the positive mentoring received from Officer Smith, despite all his challenges, the young man is overcoming his fears and hurdles and becoming more confident.

Just recently the mentored youth reported to Officer Smith that he applied and was accepted to Dillard High School’s Entrepreneurship Magnet Program and has taken the first steps towards a bright future.

The young man is an example that words matter and that a positive role model can make a tremendous impact in motivating young people to shoot for the stars.
