Wally Elfers, a former Lauderhill commissioner with a yen for hang-gliding and boxing, was equally fond of public office.

The longtime commissioner died of cancer Sept. 29 at a hospice center in North Carolina. He was 87.

"Wally had a heart of gold," Lauderhill Mayor Richard Kaplan said. "People loved him. He wanted to help people. And he worked his whole life doing it."

Mr. Elfers made his first run for office in 1973. He lost that year, but ran again and again – eight times in all — before he was finally appointed to the commission in 1991.

"That's how he was," said daughter-in-law Michelle Elfers. "He never gave up."

A retired businessman and Air Force veteran, Mr. Elfers served on the commission for 13 years before losing an election in 2004. Even then, he said he would be around if the city needed him.

Commissioners later named a city park after him.

Mr. Elfers was inducted into Broward County's Senior Hall of Fame in 2004 for his long record of civic service. He was named Lauderhill's Pioneer of the Year in 1996, an honor given to those who have contributed to the community more than 25 years.

Mr. Elfers moved to Lauderhill more than 50 years ago from his native Ohio after marrying his high school sweetheart. The couple raised their four children in Lauderhill and moved to North Carolina last year.

He was predeceased by his wife, Anne Elfers; son Bill Elfers, of Plantation; and Cheryl Elfers, of Ashville, N.C

His survivors include son Tom Elfers, of Rutherfordton, N.C.; daughter Donna Leckrone, of Cary, Ill.; eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
