I am
very pleased to announce that as we enter 2012, we have been
able to find ways to continue to provide for the fundamental
needs of our residents and businesses. Thanks to our many
sponsors, we have also been able to provide many special
activities that make Lauderhill unique.
Last
year we held our first ever Broward Green Expo, that was a huge
success. Already, we are working to try and continue this
program which is funded through sponsorships. As the 2012
program develops, we will post updates on the web site,
www.browardgreenexpo.com, as well as on Facebook and
Twitter.
One
of the many topics covered in the Expo was how much money we
waste on electricity. As a benchmark, if you are living in a
standard 2 bedroom condominium, and your electric bill is over
$150/month, you are probably wasting your money. If you want to
learn more about reducing your electric bill, go to our web
site,
www.lauderhillgreen.com.
In
conjunction with trying to reduce your electric bill, the city
is continuing to provide Interest Free (0%) Energy Loans to make
it more affordable to save more of your money. Residents can
purchase energy star appliances such as refrigerators,
dishwashers, washers and freezers, plus qualified air
conditioners, solar water heaters, solar panels and tankless
water heaters, and obtain a loan of up to $2000. The loans
require qualification, and are repayable over a maximum 24 month
period. To apply, you can get an application at the Lauderhill
City Hall or get more information again at
www.lauderhillgreen.com.
The
purpose of these programs is to learn how to reduce everyone’s
utility bills.
I am
also pleased to announce our 4th season of Jazz Picnic in the
Park. This free jazz concert series is held on the 2nd Sunday of
each month through March, from 10:30 am to 2:30 pm, at the
Amphitheatre in the Lieberman Botanical Gardens. I want to thank
our sponsors, the Inverrary Association and the Mental Health
Association of South Florida, whose funding allowed us to
present these concerts. For more information on the concerts you
can go to www.lauderhilljazz.com, and also through Facebook and
Twitter.
For
the 5th consecutive year, we are offering to three Lauderhill
graduating High School Seniors a chance for one our College
Scholarships. First place is $500, second place is $300 and
third place is $200. Any Senior High School Student living in
Lauderhill, attending any High School (Public or Private), who
is going onto college or vocational school can qualify. The
application requires 2 written essays. Grading of the essays
will be conducted by the Lauderhill Educational Advisory Board,
and applications must be submitted in person to the City Clerks
Department in City Hall by 5 PM, February 23, 2012. For more
information, speak with your school’s Brace Advisor or
www.lhillteencentral.com (under the Scholarship Tab).
Also
on that web site you will find information about our Unitown
Program for 9th through 11th graders. Unitown is a cultural
diversity camp and is free to attend. It is an extremely
rewarding program, which my son can attest to, and is also
favorably looked upon for the college application entrance
process.
