More than ever…you should be
proud to live here in the City of Lauderhill! Although many link Lauderhill’s
"heyday" to the days of old and Jackie Gleason, I assure you that Lauderhill has
yet to enter its’ real "prime time", so to speak.

This past Arbor Day, Lauderhill,
under the auspices of the Replant Broward Program, opened its’ very own
permanent Tree Nursery in order to give all residents free trees. My personal
passion for the environment and commitment to maintaining the innate beauty of
Lauderhill has led me to make every effort to increase the tree canopy here in
the City of Lauderhill. The benefits to planting trees are endless and all can
agree that trees create a serene and welcoming backdrop for all neighborhoods.
Residents, in condos and homes, as well as business owners, can pick up free
trees for landscaping improvements by visiting the Lauderhill Nursery, at the
entrance to City Hall, on 1st and 3rd Saturdays from 9 am – 11 am. Please,
do not miss out on this opportunity to help beautify your City and your home
with free trees.
Our staff is diligently working
on the parameters in which our new Housing Authority will operate. Upon the
completion of the Housing Authority, the City will be in charge of its own
destiny, providing quality housing that is equitable for all. Without having
this control mechanism in place, other cities and agencies determine the course
in which our City will place residents. Coupled with the Housing Authority, the
Commission’s commitment to better manage any underutilized land has directed
Administration to meet with developers who are interested in building superior
single-family homes that will help provide new neighborhoods that homeowners can
be proud of.
With the growing number of
families in the City, it is so very important that we continuously invest in the
lives of our children. After all, it won’t be long that these children will
oversee our future. We must never underestimate the significance of providing
quality programs and facilities to cultivate champion children as we develop
their sense of self, their confidence, and their unshakable belief that they can
do anything! Having mentioned that…it is with great pleasure that I bring to
your attention a few capital projects targeting the success of our children.
First, both Veterans Park and
Wolk Park, with Swim Central grants, are getting brand new teaching pools to
guarantee that all kindergartners in the City of Lauderhill will learn to swim.
As a result, the Aquatics division will be able to add additional swim lessons
for people of all ages. By mid- August, I invite you to stop by either one of
the community pools and take a look at what partnerships and perseverance can
accomplish.
Next, with the assistance of the
South Florida Youth Tennis Program (SFYTP), the City of Lauderhill has received
grant money to build two new tennis courts at Wolk Park. Through our partnership
with the SFYTP, and under the leadership of Albert Tucker, SFYTP’s Top
Administrator, Wolk Park recently played host to a family Tennis Day where WTA
professional Shenay Perry, provided a free tennis clinic. Miss Perry, currently
the highest ranked African American female tennis player behind Shanda Ruben and
the Williams sisters, helps oversee tennis after school programs and summer
camps in the City of Lauderhill. The SFYTP continuously strives to bring quality
programs that develop not only youthful tennis skills but also life skills, as
they also include an academic component in their youth programs through
relationships with the Smart School and Lauderhill Middle.
Also, the Lauderhill Middle
School Concession/Locker room is under construction. With the West Broward
Optimist Club overseeing our successful Youth Football and Cheerleading programs
in the City of Lauderhill, we are pleased to be able to provide them with a
quality facility that will have locker rooms and the capability to house all of
their sports and concessionary equipment. Please check the City of Lauderhill’s
website periodically at www.lauderhill-fl.gov for the date of the Ribbon Cutting
Ceremony we plan for the inauguration of the building. We hope to see you there.
Finally, as many of you have
requested, the Parks Department has begun a complete renovation of the
multipurpose field at Veterans Park. With the many sports and activities that
the City is fortunate to provide, the field at Veterans Park is undergoing a
complete overhaul to ensure that upcoming leagues can play on top-notch soil and
grass.
More than ever…the City of
Lauderhill is doing just that…more than ever! I could effortlessly go on and on
about all the terrific projects that the City is committed to completing
in order to improve our quality of life. More than ever…I submit to you that now
is the time you should take a look around and attempt to visualize where we are
going as a community. More than ever…I am proud to serve you as a Commissioner.
More than ever…I love living in the great City of Lauderhill!
At your services,
Tyson T. Jones
Commissioner
