Lauderhill Commissioner Ken Thurston Seeks Input from the Business Community at the Upcoming Lauderhill Business Forum.

Lauderhill, FL – Business owners and leaders of the community are invited to gather at the Lauderhill Commission Chamber (5581 W. Oakland Park Blvd.) on Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at 6 pm to discuss the needs of Lauderhill business owners in today’s sluggish economy.

“With the assistance of the Lauderhill Regional Chamber of Commerce (LRCC) I am seeking input from our local businesses in order to find out what kinds of resources are needed to assist them and ideally help them grow. Lauderhill needs a strong business community in order to remain economically vibrant,” states Commissioner Ken Thurston, program organizer.

After the Forum, moderated by the Broward College Institute for Economic Development, the LRCC will help to devise programs and identify resources to aid businesses.

Lauderhill's Vice Mayor Hayward J. Benson, Jr., Appointed to Community and Economic Development Steering Committee at NLC

Washington, DC – National League of Cities President Ted Ellis, has announced the appointment of Hayward J. Benson, Jr., Vice Mayor, City of Lauderhill to the National League of Cities’ (NLC) 2012 Community and Economic Development Steering Committee. The Community and Economic Development committee is responsible for developing policy positions on issues involving housing, community and economic development, land use, recreation and parks, historic preservation and international competitiveness. The appointment was announced by NLC President Ted Ellis, Mayor, Bluffton, Ind.

The US Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs, Bureau of Justice Assistance has announced that the Lauderhill Police Department has been awarded at total of $49,038.00 in the 2001 Justice Assistance Grant. These funds are to be used to assist the department’s efforts to prevent or reduce crime, enhance the technological abilities of the department, and improve overall effectiveness and efficiency of the department as it relates to addressing community concerns.

Watering Restrictions Now Permanent in Broward County

Master Plan Task Force requests Resident Input on proposed Strategic Plan

The Master Plan Task Force, a group of residents appointed by the City Commission, has spent the past year developing a proposed Strategic Plan to set priorities for Lauderhill over the next five years. The Task Force requests that residents review the proposed Strategic Plan and provide comments. THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE, OFFICE OF JUSTICE PROGRAMS, BUREAU OF JUSTICE ASSISTANCE HAS ANNOUNCED THAT THE LAUDERHILL POLICE DEPARTMENT IS ELIGIBLE TO RECEIVE $264,217.00 FROM THE RECOVERY ACT EDWARD BYRNE MEMORIAL JUSTICE ASSISTANCE GRANT (JAG) FOR 2009.

NOTICE OF PROJECTED AMENDMENT TO Community Development Block Grant Program (CDBG)

The City of Lauderhill is an entitlement recipient of federal funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) under the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG). HUD developed the program under Title III of Division B of the Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008. The Mayor and City Commissioners will consider adopting the Neighborhood Stabilization program (NSP) as a substantial amendment to the FY 2009 Action Plan.

The funds must be used in targeted areas of “greatest need’ within the City of Lauderhill for the purpose of acquiring, rehabilitating, redeveloping and the re-sale of “foreclosed/abandoned” properties. As a grantee, the City is required to submit a plan to HUD for the use of NSP funds as a substantial amendment to the City’s FY 2009 Action Plan no later than December 1, 2008. A draft of the NSP Plan can be viewed on our webpage at: www.lauderhill-fl.gov.

A 15-day public comment period will commence November 11, 2008 and end November 26, 2008. A copy of the NSP application can be viewed here. Or you may pick up a copy at the Office of the City Clerk located at 3800 Inverrary Boulevard; Suite 301; Lauderhill, Florida.

The Federal Recovery package : What's In It for Cities and How to Access the Resources

NLC will review the major provisions of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which includes resources to create jobs through federal investments in our cities' transportation, water and sewer, housing, energy, education, and public safety infrastructure. City officials can learn up-to-date information on the timing and process for accessing these resources. NLC will also offer advice on key steps cities and towns can be taking to prepare for use of the funds.
